The Army will hold a memorial service in Germany for Sgt. Tatjana Reed, a soldier formerly stationed in Kentucky who died in Iraq last week.

Reed, 34, was killed June 22 when a homemade bomb detonated near her convoy in Samarra, the Defense Department reported this week. Another soldier, Spc. Torey J. Dantzler, 22, of Columbia, La., also died in the explosion.

A memorial service Friday at Kaiserslautern, Germany, will honor both soldiers who were assigned to the 66th Transportation Company. Reed was a truck driver in the unit, which had been in Iraq since January.

Reed had previously served at a number of Army posts, including Fort Knox and Fort Campbell in Kentucky, and in Kosovo.

According to her biography prepared for the memorial service, Reed was born in Germany and graduated from high school there. Her Army service records listed Fort Campbell, Ky., as her hometown of record. She had been in the Army for more than a decade, graduating from basic training in February 1991.

“She loved the Army,” her mother, Brigitte Dykty, of Clarksville, Tenn., said earlier this week after learning of her daughter’s death.

In addition to her mother, Reed is survived by a 10-year-old daughter, Genevieve Reed.

As a result of her service in Iraq, Reed will be posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, the Army said.
