Fort Carson soldier killed in Iraq on 4th of July

FORT CARSON, Colo. — Friends, family members and fellow soldiers were mourning the death of a Fort Carson soldier who military officials said was killed on the Fourth of July from injuries suffered in a grenade attack.

The Pentagon said Army Spc. Steven A. Davis, 23, of Woodbridge, Va., died July 4 when insurgents attacked his unit. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson.

Davis had already received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star during less than two years in the Army. He enlisted in the Army in September 2005 and was serving in his first deployment.

Five members of the combat team died in a single incident, June 28, the single most deadly encounter of any Fort Carson-based unit.

The brigade is locked in a block-by-block battle to rid the eastern half of Baghdad of insurgents.

Davis was the 214th Fort Carson soldier to die in the line of duty since the beginning of the Iraq war.
