Soldier from N.C. among 3 dead in roadside bombing

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A 30-year-old Army sergeant from North Carolina died last week along with two other soldiers when a bomb exploded near their vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, the military said.

Sgt. Lee C. Wilson of Chapel Hill died Sept. 6, the Department of Defense said. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Wilson’s father, Lee E. Wilson, said he had looked forward to visiting the beach when he came home after more than a year in Iraq.

“We always talked about what he was going to do when he got out,” he said. “He didn’t want to be there.”

Wilson attended Chapel Hill High School and worked in security before he entered the military in 2001. He was on his fourth deployment and was scheduled to come home in December, his father said.

He is survived by his father, his mother, Penny Wilson, and his sister, Leia Wilson, all of Chapel Hill.

Also killed in the blast were Spc. Jason J. Hernandez, 21, of Streetsboro, Ohio; and Spc. Thomas L. Hilbert, 20, of Venus, Texas. They died Sept. 7.
