PERRYTON, Texas — The mother of a 19-year-old Marine from the Panhandle says that Iraq was tough for her son, but he never wavered in his commitment.

Perryton native Lance Cpl. Seth Huston was killed Saturday during fighting in Iraq’s Anbar province, the Department of Defense confirmed Monday.

“I talked to him two days before he died,” his mother, Renee Huston, told the Amarillo Globe-News for its Tuesday online editions. “He said they were still getting mortar attacks.

“He’s always been gung-ho and proud to be a Marine. But he said, ‘We’re tired, we want to come home.’ They were just doing what they had to do to come home.”

Huston said her son joined the Marine Corps in June 2003 and deployed to Iraq in March. She said he decided to join the Marines in 10th grade after running into a recruiter at a high school. The events of Sept. 11, 2001, made him even more sure of his decision.
