Family remembers S.C. airman killed in Iraq

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — A 21-year-old Georgetown native killed while serving in Iraq was remembered as a cheerful and friendly young man who was voted most popular in his graduating class.

Airman 1st Class Carl L. Anderson Jr. was killed by a roadside bomb on Sunday near the northern city of Mosul. He was assigned to the 3rd Logistics Readiness Squadron based at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

Anderson entered the Air Force after graduating from Georgetown High School in 2001, said his cousin Mickey Smith, who works as a school bus driver.

The school held a moment of silence Monday in Anderson’s memory, said Georgetown High School principal Michael Cafaro.

Anderson was voted “most popular” in his senior class, Cafaro said.

Smith remembered his cousin as a kindhearted person who had many friends and was involved in a number of activities in high school, including ROTC.

He also was “prom prince” his junior year, and “always had a smile on his face,” Smith said.

Anderson enjoyed serving in the Air Force because it allowed him to visit new places. He liked Alaska, although it was “very cold,” his cousin said.

Anderson is survived by his parents, Doris and Carl Anderson Sr., and two sisters, Smith said.
