Scholarship named in honor of Marine killed in Iraq

KOKOMO, Ind. — A Kokomo High School graduate who died in Iraq has a new scholarship named in his honor.

The Kokomo-Center School Board established Monday the James Swain Scholarship Fund. It accepted an initial donation of $3,705 from the Marine’s family and Kokomo High School teachers.

Lance Cpl. Swain, 20, died Nov. 15 in Fallujah, Iraq, from small-arms fire. He was the third Kokomo native to die in Iraq.

Corporation coordinator of fiscal services Gerri Smalling said the scholarship will go to a Kokomo High School graduate who shows exemplary traits of providing community service.

Swain was a 2002 honors graduate of Kokomo High School and was the son of Daniel and Mona Swain of Kokomo.
