Marine from Maryland dies in Iraq

BALTIMORE — A Marine who grew up in Maryland was killed over the weekend in the fighting in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Cpl. Kirk J. Bosselmann, 21, who grew up in Dickerson in Montgomery County before moving to Napa, Calif., after graduating from high school, was killed Saturday in Iraq’s Anbar province. Bosselmann was killed as the result of enemy action, but the Pentagon would not release more details.

Bosselmann was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp at Lejeune, N.C.

Bosselmann grew up in Dickerson and graduated from Poolesville High School in 2001, according to the Rev. Merritt Ednie of Boyds Presbyterian Church.

Bosselmann moved to Napa after high school, where he enlisted in the Marine Corps, Ednie said.

The pastor led a prayer service on Sunday in honor of Bosselmann at the Potomac Hunt Club in Dickerson, The Frederick News-Post reported. The Marine was a member of the club.

Postmistress Maureen Dolan said the Marine’s parents, Beverly and Rainer Bosselmann, went to the post office Saturday, the day their son was killed, to mail him a package “filled with assorted sundries,” The News-Post said.

Ms. Dolan said flags were flying at half staff in Poolesville as well as Dickerson. “It’s going to be tough. This is the first from around here.”

Bosselman is the fifth Marylander killed in Iraq this month.
