WASHINGTON — A U.S. service member was killed and another was wounded in Iraq on Sunday when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, according to a press release from Operation Inherent Resolve.

A Pentagon official confirmed to Military Times that the service members targeted in the IED attack were American troops.

More information will be released pending notification of next of kin, according to the press release.

The U.S.-led coalition in Iraq is assisting Iraqi security forces to cleanse the remaining pockets of ISIS fighters.

Following the liberation of Mosul and a rapid victory in Tal Afar, Iraqi forces along with the Shia dominated Popular Mobilization Forces are currently engaged in an operation to clear the town of Hawija, located just under 200 miles north of Baghdad.

According to U.S. officials in Baghdad, those operations are moving rapidly, with more than 100 villages cleared since the start of operations.

ISIS still occupies territory along the Euphrates river bank and various pockets in Anbar province in Iraq.
