Hawaii senator shares story of girl, 5, beaten by soldier father

HONOLULU — Hawaii's congressional delegation is working on legislation inspired by Talia Williams, the 5-year-old girl who was beaten to death at the hands of her soldier father.

Sen. Mazie Hirono shared Talia's story on the Senate floor Monday. She says Talia could have been saved if the abuse was reported to state officials.

Hirono says on military bases teachers, doctors and police are only required to report suspected abuse to the Department of Defense. But it's the state that can remove a child from a home.

Hirono has introduced the proposal as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. She also plans to introduce it as a separate bill.

Talia's mother Tarshia Williams says she's praying that the bill passes so children can get the help they need.
