Vets find humor in civilians' barracks layover

Passengers on a United Airlines flight got a taste of boot camp when they made an unexpected layover Friday at a Canadian military base.

Well, maybe not boot camp, but cold military barracks certainly riled up the 176 passengers on United Flight 958 destined for London.

Instead, they were treated to a 20-hour stay at Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay in Newfoundland, where temperatures dropped to 39 degrees — and blankets were MIA.

One passenger among those stranded because of aircraft mechanical problems told CNN: "While there was a bed, there were no blankets ... and there was no heating in the particular barracks building I was assigned to. So it was quite cold for quite a few hours while we waited for breakfast to be served."

Passengers received the full military experience, dining in the mess hall the next morning before being flown to Newark, New Jersey, en route to their connecting flight at London Heathrow, according to reports.

While a nightmare for some, members of the military community found the incident amusing.

"How do you think we feel?" posted Terminal Lance, a Marine vet who pokes fun at the Marine Corps' eccentricities, on Facebook.

"So they spent the night in a military barracks and they are outraged about that? Really? So should I be outraged because I have to live in one?" commented David Griffith.
