SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A former civilian employee of the U.S. Defense Department was sentenced to one year in prison for his role in a scheme to illegally sell government property from California military installations, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Jeffery Parsons, 44, was convicted of conspiring to accept illegal gratuities on account of official actions and conspiring to sell government property without authority, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Parsons, of Dillon, Montana, was ordered to repay the federal government over $230,000.

Federal agents have seized more than 20 vehicles and the money from 10 bank accounts belonging to married U.S. Army veterans in Texas, saying the pair used personal information stolen from soldiers to defraud the military out of as much as $11 million.

The crimes were committed when Parsons worked as an Environmental Protection Specialist at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, California and Naval Air Station Lemoore in Lemoore, California, the statement said. His responsibilities included the handling and disposal of hazardous materials such as batteries, fuel and oil.

Starting in 2012, Parsons and his co-conspirators made hundreds of thousands of dollars by using his authority to illegally sell materials to recycling companies, prosecutors said.

Another defendant, Travis Wong, was sentenced in March to three years of probation. Wong was also ordered to forfeit approximately $314,000 to the U.S. government.
