Deborah Lee James, former secretary of the Air Force, is joining the Unisys board of directors, Unisys said in a press release Monday.

James served as the 23rd secretary of the Air Force, from December 2013 to January this year.  In that role, she was responsible for the affairs of the Air Force and the welfare of nearly 660,000 airmen and their families, Air Force officials said.

“I am very pleased to be joining the board of Unisys, a company whose commitment to safeguard its clients’ most crucial business assets is second to none,” James said in the release. “I look forward to helping make the company’s vision of enhancing peoples’ lives through digital security a reality.”

Before serving as the Air Force’s top civilian leader, James had 30 years of experience in national security, with roles in the Defense Department and on Capitol Hill.

James served as a staff member on the House Armed Services Committee before she became assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs at the Pentagon in the 1990s, then later she held several corporate leadership positions including senior vice president and director of homeland security for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and president of the technical and engineering sector at that company.

“We warmly welcome Debbie to the Unisys board,” Peter Altabef, president and CEO of Unisys, said in the release. “As someone who just recently led one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, she understands that combating the growing range of threats that we all face across cyber, logistics and border security requires new thinking.”
