Cutting sling to save fuel or get out of a sticky situation isn't all that uncommon. In fact, plenty of stuff went missing when air crews cut sling on conex boxes full of rear-echelon gear over the desert in the opening days of OIF. I'm sure there are foot lockers and shower shoes in use today in villages all over southern Iraq thanks to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
Though I've imagined a conex full of printers and foot powder exploding on the deck, I've never actually seen a big object take that loooooong fall to the ground. Until now.
