Multiple Impact Bullets makes a .45 cal pistol cartridge called the Mi-3 Pulse that contains a slug and 3 tethered projectiles. The idea is that the center slug tracks directly to the target as a normal bullet would, but it's followed by three smaller projectiles that are tethered to form a sort of bolas.
The company's line: "By using the spin from rifling to instantly/rapidly spread 3 identical fragments out from the original center of rotation, the pattern increases in size up to 3x faster than Buck-shot. This expanded pattern is ideal for C.Q.B. / Personal defense. The fact that the fragments remain tethered together result in a pre-determined ~14" (Handgun) or ~24" (Shotgun) maximum diameter spread to focus the stopping power to original line of fire. This mitigates the risk of collateral damage [due] to errant projectiles (I.E. Infinite expanding buckshot). Simply stated, this ammo improves the shooters chances of striking their intended target sooner with less risk to bystanders."
That's one way to look at it. Another? It's firing lightweight projectiles with three of them hitting someplace 14" outside your intended point of impact.
The projectiles are available in two configurations, Full-Lethal and Semi-Lethal; each contain a center projectile and three 55 grain outer projectiles. The difference appears to be bullet velocity, with the semi-lethal cartridge firing at a reduced velocity that leads to reduced bullet penetration.
The MI-3 Pulse is available in 10, 30 and 50 packs in either full-lethal or semi-lethal configuration for $40, $115 and $189. Aside from the .45 cal Mi-3, the company also has 12 gauge shotgun ammo now and says they will be shipping a 9mm version of the MI-3 Pulse in early 2015.
