Marine Corps Times staff writer Bethany Crudele reports this week about a new push to educate Marines about dietary supplements. She writes:

In an effort to help Marines make safer, more informed decisions about dietary supplements, the Marine Corps is conducting a servicewide education campaign through November, according to Marine administrative message 562/12.

Part of an initiative called Operation Supplement Safety, it will include information booths at base commissaries and public service announcements at base movie theaters and on the Armed Forces Network and Pentagon Channel. Officials want Marines to practice safe supplement use, the MARADMIN says.

A study released this year by the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego found that nearly half of U.S. service members take dietary supplements for weight loss or performance enhancement. The study also found that Marines are more likely to take supplements than are other service members, citing a possible need to adhere to the Corps' "rigorous" fitness and body-fat standards.
