The Trump administration has been quietly adding mobile surveillance cameras at the U.S.-Mexico border in response to the coronavirus pandemic, though fewer people appear to be crossing illegally. It’s the latest move as operations at the U.S.-Mexico border have become increasingly militarized and secretive.
Lt. Gen. Laura Richardson, the commander of U.S. Army North, explained to reporters that the additional 540 U.S. troops would help Border Patrol with newly granted authorities. Those new authorities allow Border Patrol agents to apprehend and immediately return migrants potentially infected with COVID-19.
