High retention rates and reenlistments have caused the Air Force to burn through its retention bonus budget earlier than expected.
The service reenlisted 15,600 soldiers since March 2024, 800 more than its goal.
A bill introduced in the House this week proposes to end federal taxes on bonuses given to troops for joining or re-enlisting in the military.
The bonuses range from $180,000 to $360,000, according to a leaked Air Force memo.
