Remains of soldier killed in Chosin Reservoir battle now returning home

SARATOGA, N.Y. — The remains of a New York soldier killed during the Korean War 68 years ago are scheduled to be returned for burial in his upstate New York hometown.

The family of Army Pfc. John Martin says a Delta flight carrying the casket with his remains was scheduled to land Friday at Albany International Airport.

There’s now a national veterans cemetery not far from where John Martin grew up along the upper Hudson River, but when it came time to pick a burial place for the soldier 68 years after he was killed in the Korean War, his niece picked the family plot at a nearby cemetery.

The Pentagon announced last week that Martin’s remains had been identified. He was killed during fighting near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. His remains were found in 2001.

After an Army honor guard transfers the casket to a hearse, Martin’s remains will be taken to the town of Saratoga, 25 miles north of Albany.

Burial with full military honors is set for Sunday afternoon in a cemetery outside the village of Schuylerville.
