When the Air Force unveiled its new PT program in July 2010, the goal was to crack down on cheating — airmen were testing their friends and inflating test scores — and to get the force in shape.

Predictions that one in four airmen would fail the new test didn't pan out; the Air Force reported a 90 percent pass rate by last July. This year, the pass rate is up to 93 percent and more than half are scoring a 90 or above and taking the test only once a year, instead of twice, said Capt. Kristina Rennie, an Air Force fitness spokeswoman at the Pentagon.

But that hasn't stopped nagging suspicions that the new PT test is causing lots of injuries and that some airmen are gaming the system with fake injuries and bogus medical ailments.
