Get your outdoor gear for less by joining a military team on ProMotive pro deal site

The only thing better than shiny new gear is shiny new half-priced gear.

To get your discount gear fix, you can either scour the daily deal sites until you have refresh button overload, or just check out ProMotive.com -- a members-only pro deal site with discounts up to 70 percent.

"ProMotive.com was created as a way to connect companies with influential brand advocates online," creators say on the site. "Each team you join gives you access to different brands. Brands decide which teams they give access to and what the discount is."

Signing up is easy, but be ready to show your military credentials.

First, sign up for a free account.

Then, find a team that fits your interests and background. Check out the teams for the ArmyAir ForceMarine CorpsNavy and Coast Guard. Those are just a few examples; there are 3,130 teams active on the site.

Fill out the team application online and submit the necessary information. To be accepted to a military team you'll need to have a .mil email address and/or provide additional information.

The folks at ProMotive will approve or deny your request in a day or two. Once approved, you're free to shop from any of the brands listed on your team page. Discounts and brands vary from team to team, so join as many as you can to get the best deal.

For research purposes (and to re-up my supply of HoneyStingers ... ) I joined the Outdoor Media and Industry Advocates team.

That team gives me 262 brands to choose from -- the sitewide brand count is 323.  And they're great brands, such as CEP, Sunto, Altra, New Balance, Gu ... things I'd actually buy.

One example: When I bought my Altra Superior trail shoes in a retail store I paid $95. They're currently listed on Promotive for $47.50.

Each brand will have its own rules and policies, so read the fine print carefully. Some sales may be final, some brands may offer only exchanges for different sizes and some may put a limit on how many items you can buy at one time or in a calendar year.

The one thing Promotive doesn't sell is restraint. The hardest part now is resisting a good bargain.
