Video: Washington hosts National Purple Heart Day at Mt. Vernon

National Purple Heart Day ceremony was held at George Washington’s Mount Vernon on Aug. 7, to honor service members who have been killed or wounded and presented the medal created on this date in 1782 by Gen. George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Originally called the Badge of Military Merit, the award fell into disuse, but was revived in 1932 as the Purple Heart.
