LAWTON, Okla. — The U.S. Army has applied for a Nuclear Regulatory Commission permit allowing it to possess and manage small amounts uranium where the Davy Crockett bazooka was used — which includes Fort Sill in southwestern Oklahoma.
The bazooka was designed to fire a nuclear warhead, but was never used in combat. It was, however, fired at training areas that include the west range at Fort Sill. It fired a projectile that contained 6.7 ounces of a depleted uranium alloy.
Army environmental safety officers believe depleted uranium may still be lying around, but The Lawton Constitution reports that it is no danger to the public because it's in an area that's off-limits to the public.
