J. Dewy has been a go-to name in firearms cleaning equipment for years, but they've help of putting out a compact kit until they could produce something worthy of their brand. heir entry to the  cable-based system was measured to maintain the quality associated with their renowned rotating, non-marring cleaning rods. The AR-16/M-16 Field Cleaning Kit, right ($39.95) is just that. The Dewy kit is sharply focused on cleaning your AR in the field without an ounce of wasted space or weight.

The kit comes with a 30" coated cable with an ingenious integral pull bead that replaces the commonly lost t-handle normally included in cable kits to give you something to hang on to when pulling a patch through the barrel. Also in the flat case is a 2-peice t-handle chamber/pistol rod, chamber brush, Nylon bore brush, scraper, pick, stuck case remover, patches and 1/2 of lube. More info: deweyrods.com

If you need more versatility, but still want a compact kit, have a look at Bill Rogers' latest creation. The Bore Squeeg-E Cleaning System, left ($80) uses a polymer squeegee that's run through the bore just once in place of an endless procession of cotton patches used with traditional bore cleaning systems. The Bore Squeege-E is compact and capable, with components to clean just about any caliber fitting in a case the size of a soda can. If you don't need the full range of calibers included with this kit, there are lower priced options. Bushmaster markets the Bore Squeeg-E in kits tailored to specific calibers.

The system is based around the use of flexible squeegees, sized for each caliber, that are pulled through the bore pulling fouling loosened by a water-based cleaning compound. The cleaner is run through with a cleaning brush a few times, then squeegeed out without the use of a single patch. I've used the system three times and can confirm it works. The bore on my AR was shiny and clean in about five minutes after a several hundred rounds of suppressed fire with dirty ammo. More info: rogersshootingschool.com
