Both recruit depots and the Officer Candidates School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., are using what are dubbed "anti-gravity" treadmills, which support part of a patient's weight to reduce impact as he walks or runs. The devices have gained wide acceptance by hospitals, professional sports teams and now the Marine Corps as a way to get patients with lower-extremity injuries back on their feet as rapidly as possible. A patient slips into a special pair of shorts that zip into a giant air bladder, which is then inflated to support the patient's weight.
