Veterans treatment courts seek to provide care and mentoring that will address the underlying factors affecting criminal behaviors in veterans rather than applying punishment.
The legislation will authorize the Department of Justice to nationalize a program that is currently and unevenly established and administered throughout the 50 state judicial systems.
The bill’s purpose is simple: to authorize the Justice Department to support the nation’s state judicial systems with the needed policies, training resources, and funding to establish and sustain their respective state veterans treatment court programs.
