The Washington, D.C.-based race sold out all discounted entries to current military members within 8 hours, 49 minutes of becoming available Feb. 23.

This year's race, set for Oct. 25, will mark the 40th running of the Marine Corps Marathon.

Of the 2,500 registered military runners — 1,833 men and 667 women — a total of 2,018 are serving on active duty, with the remaining 482 hailing from the National Guard or reserves. They range in age from 19 to 60 and come from all 50 states. Several are currently stationed overseas.

All branches of the armed forces and some foreign military members are registered.

Fittingly, however, most are Marines, with 921 Leathernecks registered to run this year. There are also 846 first-time marathoners and 1,394 soon to run their first MCM.
