Ash Carter, who has been nominated to become the next defense secretary, is recovering from back surgery on Friday, according to the White House.

"Mr. Carter decided to go ahead with the previously scheduled procedure so that he could complete it before beginning his confirmation process," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement Friday.

Earnest called the surgery successful but did not specify what kind of procedure it was.

"Mr. Carter is resting comfortably with his family and is looking forward to the confirmation process and, if confirmed, to serving with the men and women of the Defense Department," Earnest said.

The White House did not have any further information about Carter's condition on Monday.
