Even those experiences could not have prepared him for the Spartan Death Race in the picturesque town of Pittsfield, Vt., in 2011. The 48-hour adventure race requires participants to chop wood, move boulders, climb rocks and swim across a frigid lake in the rain while carrying dozens of pounds of gear. Cisowski broke three toes, fractured his ankle and wondered what he’d gotten himself into.
