On Jan. 7 the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. hosted an inaugural awards show called “The Lincoln Awards: A Concert for Veterans & the Military Family.” Former Army corporal J.R. Martinez, a Purple Heart recipient, wounded warrior advocate, actor and Dancing with the Stars winner, served as a presenter. Hours before the show, Army Times caught up with Martinez, who in a 2003 IED explosion in Iraq suffered severe burns on more than a third of his body. He was hospitalized for nearly 3 years as he underwent dozens of surgeries and skin grafts.
