It's a 7.62 NATO bolt action rifle with a Proof Research 16" carbon fiber wrapped barrel that breaks down for transport or storage into a bag that's a little larger than a 3-day-assault pack. Assembly can be performed without tools, but the provided torque wrench can be used for optimal ballistic performance.
We'd heard a little bit about the project last year when it was brought to our attention as a TSWG (Technical Support Working Group) broad agency announcement, but this is the first rifle we've seen in response to the announcement.
Kel Whelan shared the photos with us after shooting them at the NDIA Small Arms Symposium in Phoenix last week. We'll stop by the Remington Defense booth and get more details (and a photo of the disassembled rifle) when the show opens tomorrow.
UPDATE: Remington tells us the rifle is tuned for subsonic operation and weighs less than 8 pounds. The rifle shown has a Proof Research 16" carbon fiber wrapped barrel with a 1:8" twist, but the submission had a 14" barrel.
