Man gets life in prison for 2004 slaying of Army officer

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A Georgia man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a young Army officer during a robbery attempt 14 years ago.

A Superior Court judge in Savannah sentenced Deon Monroe Jones on Monday after a jury convicted the suspect of felony murder and influencing a witness.

Prosecutors say Jones shot 27-year-old Army Capt. Scott Corwin in downtown Savannah after Corwin fought back during an attempted street robbery. Corwin was attacked while walking home with his girlfriend on June 1, 2004.

News outlets report the case went unsolved for years. But prosecutors say Jones bragged about killing Corwin to fellow inmates while serving time in federal prison. Several of them testified against Jones.

Defense attorney Richard Darden told jurors the witnesses were snitches eager to cut deals with prosecutors.
