That's the question a new Duracell ad tries to answer in a short story about a little girl desperately missing her father while he's deployed.

Just in time for the Fourth of July, the commercial shows how a battery-operated teddy bear plays dad's voice, saying, "I love you, baby girl," each time the youngster gives the bear a hug.

In some moments, his voice gives the little girl hope, but at other times despair when she realizes dad's service is keeping him thousands of miles away from their family.

In the end, dad's arrival makes it all worthwhile, just as Duracell reminds its customers that "the ones you trust are always there."

According to Mashable, the tear-jerking commercial is based on a true story; company representatives were in California for a market research study when they encountered this family's story (re-enacted by actors for the ad).

"We were basically in the house of this family and we asked the daughter to show off her favorite toy," the company's brand manager, Ramon Velutini, tells Mashable. "We were expecting regular toys — remote control cars and all this — and they came running with this battery-powered bear."

Velutini said the story highlights the brand's dedication to reliable products, especially when people depend on them for a meaningful purpose.

The brand is also donating $100,000 to the USO's Comfort Crew for Kids, which provides support for the children in military families.
