A long-overdue update to the Surefire line arrives with the introduction of the A2L Aviator. The two-beamed favorite finally comes to the LED age, using a blazing bright-white LED for 120 lumens (main) with a set of low-powered LEDs providing low-level secondary light, available in either red, blue, yellow-green or white. All four secondary LEDs are the same, single color. It's available in your choice of secondary LEDs color this summer for $239 MSRP.
More details and a shot of the LED config on the jump.
The original A2 was designed for aircrews but it was soon co-opted for all manner of ground-pounder uses. The new version puts out a dark-adapted-vision-friendly 10 lumens using small white or colored LEDs, while the main LED gives you 120 lumens of white light to find stuff or pre-flight all the nooks and crannies on your aircraft. The 2 CR123s will give you 2 hours on the bright and 15 hours on low. It's 5.4 inches long and weighs in at 4.3 ounces of luscious hard anodized aluminum.
The controls are simple. A two-stage tailswitch activates the four low power LEDs first. Pushing harder activates the high-power, white LED. You might look at the four LEDs and think you've got four colors onboard. But, a single LED of each color would make a nasty, odd-shaped beam. So, Surefire used multiple LEDs of the same color in this configuration around the reflector to make a smooth beam.
