Staff Sgt. Tanner W. Grone was one of five Army special operations aviators killed when their helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean Sea on Nov. 10.
The carrier and its armada left the East Coast in May.
The crew was conducting a “routine air refueling mission” during a training sortie when their aircraft suffered a mishap, the military said Sunday.
The exercises involved more than 11,000 U.S. personnel who are on station there in case the Israel-Hamas war erupts into a larger conflict.
