CONCORD, N.H. — Each of New Hampshire's 10 community mental health centers will have a staff member devoted to helping veterans, military service members and their families connect with other resources under a first-of-its-kind initiative being launched by the state's Department of Health and Human Services.

Commissioner Nick Toumpas was joined by federal and state military officials and civilian sector partners on Wednesday to describe several initiatives aimed at improving health care and other services for veterans, active military and their families.

Federal officials say no other state has created liaison positions devoted to that population within its entire community mental health system.

Another program starting Wednesday is a statewide campaign to encourage health care providers, social service organizations and others to ask patients and clients if they had served in the military.
