Based out of Utah, Christensen Arms has developed a new line of lightweight rifles with Kyle Lamb of Viking Tactics. The VTAC-15 rifle is available in 2 models; one model utilizes a carbon fiber wrapped barrel, the other a lightweight fluted stainless steel barrel. Both VTAC-15 variants are shipping within the month, and feature Christensen Arms' lightweight carbon fiber hand guards.
The carbon fiber wrapped barrel model of the VTAC-15 utilizes Christensen's extensive experience with carbon fiber, as they are the original patent holder on carbon fiber wrapped barrels.
Carbon fiber sheets are cut by specialized machines, and then laid up by hand around barrel liners to build up barrels. The stainless steel liner of the barrel is completely safe to shoot even without carbon fiber, but the carbon fiber adds stiffness while also working as a heat sink for the barrel.
With a carbon fiber hand guard and barrel, the complete weapon weighs 5 pounds 5 ounces and costs $2850, while the lightweight profile, fluted stainless steel barrel version weighs 5 pounds 6 ounces and costs $2650.
