U.S. and Japanese crews extinguished a fire that affected multiple decks aboard the USS New Orleans. There are no reports of injuries or oil spills as U.S. and Japanese crews continue to fight the blaze. Veterans of the war in Afghanistan are telling a commission that their experience was not only hell, but but also confounding and demoralizing. The children, ages four and seven, were swept downstream by a flash flood after the Rio Ruidoso river rose to a record-setting 20 feet. Long stretches of the border are under the supervision of nearby military bases, empowering U.S. troops to detain people entering the country illegally.
