The long-sought assistance for Afghan refugees still faces a difficult fight in Congress. Officials will speed up portions of the PACT Act to allow enrollment of thousands of veterans into VA health care next month. Military personnel stationed at Camp Lejeune from 1975–1985 had at least a 20% higher risk for a number of cancers than those stationed elsewhere. Despite Congress authorizing the increase, the Pentagon is treating it as optional amid an ongoing compensation study. Families could see lower costs for mental health care as well as expanded counseling services. A new Space Force structure approved in the 2024 defense policy law may create more flexibility for troops. The Navy and Justice Department cited reports that “unscrupulous people and companies” attempted to acquire the personal information of filers. Service members and spouses from each U.S. military branch will be invited to join a new housing-focused working group.
