Among the multiple resources available to service members on the move, the Housing Early Assistance Tool may be one of the most straightforward, offering to connect troops and families with needed resources at their future duty stations.

Well, some troops and families: It’s been open to sailors since its inception in 2012, and the Air Force implemented the tool in early April.

The program allows eligible service members to request information about, and file advanced applications for, privatized housing, military housing office-managed housing and housing under the Rental Partnership Program. The site separates users by whether they’ve received their orders, with different features available for each group.

Users also can request help finding housing in the community, either for permanent residency or on a temporary basis while other housing opens up.

Not ready for those decisions? Users also can simply request information about housing at the installation of their choice (or multiple installations, if orders aren’t final), or a phone call from the relevant MHO.

The site doesn’t allow users to reserve a spot on wait lists, nor does it let them jump the line ahead of others who’ve already been issued their orders. It may also be of limited use to airmen and soldiers heading to joint installations where base housing is managed by an Army-run office, which likely won’t appear on the site-selection menu.

Navy users can get more detailed information here.
