Back in 2014, Dan Mackay, an amateur military historian and researcher at Extreme Relic Hunters, found 14,000 British-issued dog tags buried next to a World War II era anti-artillery gun in a field outside of London, England.

Now he's working to return them to the families of their owners, according to the History Channel. So far, with the help of the Royal British Legion, eight of the dog tags have been returned. Mackay has taken his search public, listing the dog tags on eBay.

The dog tags are believed to be among the first of the stainless-steel tags commissioned by the British Army.

"It's as if [the dog tags] are being finally put in place after 70-odd years of being lost… People say it doesn't seem real, until then, all of a sudden, they get a tag in their hands," Mackay told the History Channel
