The Basic Allowance for Housing is going up in 2022 for the vast majority — 86% — of Military Housing Areas across the 50 states. The military services have so far approved just 4,167 claims for the temporary increase in Basic Allowance for Housing, far fewer than were anticipated by defense officials. The Pentagon is giving its personnel chief 90 days to come up with a plan to address economic insecurity in the force. Soon, fully-qualified troops will be able to promote while waiting to attend their required professional military education. The cost of living increase will fully benefit retirees under the Civil Service Retirement System, but have a lesser impact on Federal Employee Retirement System recipients. Relief societies are helping troops facing unexpected PCS costs, including thousands of dollars to transport their pets to and from overseas. Temporary increases in BAH and TLE being explored; some services offering flexibility in reporting dates.
